A Happy & Prosperous New Year

Thursday, 30 December 2010

Your Droylsden East Labour team work hard for residents all year round. Our reputation has been built up over many decades. Local people know we are always available to help.

Your Labour team care what local people think and are the only party that listens to and regularly ask for your comments. Last year we delivered  6 separate leaflets as well as our annual Christmas card. Something no other organisation can match.

Our pledge for 2011 is to continue listening to you and working hard to help make sure that Droylsden improves. We will also be keeping a close check on the Metrolink works as it moves through Droylsden.

As we welcome in the New Year can we wish all our residents a happy and prosperous 2011.

Merry Christmas to Droylsden Residents from your Labour Team

Saturday, 25 December 2010

Cllr Kieran Quinn, Cllr Susan Quinn and Cllr Jim Middleton wish all residents a very Merry Christmas.

This is the time of year that we think of family and friends.

It is also right that we spend a moment to think about those who are on their own at this time.

Whatever your circumstances we hope you have a peaceful and joyous holiday.

Thanks for Voting Labour in Droylsden East

Wednesday, 1 December 2010

The May 2010 election result in Droylsden East showed how voters appreciate the excellent work your 3 Labour Councillor’s do - ALL YEAR ROUND.

Once again, given a clear choice at this election, voters in Droylsden put Labour first.

Local people know it is not by chance that Tameside’s Labour Council is one of the best performing Councils in the country.

The BNP had a disastrous election. Not only did their actual vote fall, their share of the vote halved.

The Tories had privately talked up their chances of coming second, however they missed out by only 16 votes. Voters in Droylsden stuck with Labour - for that we are indebted.

Our pledge to local people is to make sure your faith in Labour is returned with continued hard work and dedication.

UPDATE - Who put this here

You may recall the frustration of your 3 Labour Councillors with Metrolink's designers and planners when they decided to put this street light right in the middle of the new footpath, blocking its use for anyone with a pram or a motorised buggy.

Common sense has prevailed and they have agreed to move it back and create space.

This won't however be done for a while yet because to do so requires part of the road to be coned and the last thing we need are further traffic restrictions in the Town centre.

We will let you know when this is scheduled

Another Droylsden East Labour leaflet Delivered to 5000 homes

Monday, 29 November 2010

Below is the most recent leaflet delivered FREE to residents in Droylsden East.

All our leaflets are delivered jointly by your 3 Labour Councillors along with help from volunteers who live in the Droylsden area.

We are the only Party that regularly informs local people about what is happening in our town as well as consulting with local people on any issues that are considered important.

In 2010 residents received 5 separate leaflets as well as some individual personalised letters.

This backs up our pledge to work all year round for you.

METROLINK TOLD - GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER

Your 3 Labour Councillors Kieran Quinn, Jim Middleton & Susan Quinn have told the Metrolink that traffic must keep moving at all times during construction. Also that pedestrian safety must be a priority at all times

As we all know the work to build the new Metrolink line from central Manchester to Droylsden and then on to Ashton has been underway for nearly 2 years. During this time most of the activity throughout the town has been to completely renew the utilities along the route.

Moving these utilities away from the tram route has benefitted our town by getting millions of pounds in structural investment over these 2 years. This work has brought many challenges, not only to traffic movements throughout the town, but also concerning pedestrian safety. Additionally with GMPTE constantly moving bus stops this is leading to real confusion for bus users.

Since April the work has moved onto laying the tracks and building the tram stops. This has created some unique problems especially with access to drives. This also highlighted how the tram was close to arriving.

During all this time your 6 Droylsden councillors have met regularly with officers from the GMPTE (Greater Manchester Passenger Transport) and MPT the company building the line. At every meeting we have challenged their plans and proposed alternatives to keep the town moving.

Recent problems arose  when the traffic management arrangements failed to keep traffic moving. Many residents experienced journey times to pass through the town of over 40 minutes.

As Cllr Kieran Quinn said, “Enough is enough. We have told Metrolink they need to get their act together” “We believe keeping Droylsden moving must be the priority.”

Residents request yellow lines on new road

Cllr Kieran Quinn is following up requests made by residents living on Carpenters Walk, as well as from the Farleys Homewatch group to make the new road, especially the junctions, much safer.

Martins Way is the new road onto the estate and with no yellow lines along the road some drivers parking has caused problems, especially at the junction.

As Cllr Quinn said "This is unusual, as most people try to stop yellow lines being put down, but considering the silly parking that is happening here I can understand how people feel." "We will set this in motion and then let people know what is happening and how long this will take."

The work on the new Town Centre Metro stop has been underway for about 3 months.
Part of the design is for a new road and footpath to the side of the stop to be built.

Metrolink and their contractors had time and a blank canvass to design and produce this wholly new section of the new line. Finally last week it was ready for local residents to use.

However as Councillor Kieran Quinn said "I couldn’t believe my eyes when this new road and path was opened to see someone had put a street lamp right in the middle of the path. This means that anyone in a motorised buggy or a parent with a pram cannot use this new path."

“This is absolute madness and considering the impact the road works are having on the Town it does raise questions about the quality and standard of the completed line.

Your Councillors have demanded that this is rectified immediately but believe this should never have happened in the first place.

Droylsden East Councillor Kieran Quinn is the new Leader of Tameside Council

Sunday, 3 October 2010

Popular Labour team member - Cllr Kieran Quinn - became Tameside’s new Leader following the May elections. Kieran has pledged to keep working for local people and continue to get things done for Droylsden.

As Cllr Quinn said “The only reason I was able to be chosen as the Leader of Tameside Council was because the voters in Droylsden put their faith in me, electing me on 4 occasions to represent this town.
No matter what the future brings I will continue to work closely with my community helping Droylsden prosper."

Weather brings out the picture postcard beauty of Droylsden

Sunday, 17 January 2010

The current cold spell created a whole new set of issues for residents in and around Droylsden. Obviously we wanted to make sure that people could get out and about , get to work etc, where possible.

St Mary's Church

All the main roads were gritted and remained open. These main routes clearly included bus routes but we have also been keen to make sure that the Town centre car parks were cleared and gritted which happened, but less than we hoped. Gritting occurred away from main roads and around key sites e.g. doctors surgeries etc.

Fairfield Square

Grit salt throughout Greater Manchester is still low but Tameside received daily supplies and worked closely with the other Manchester Authorities to keep main roads clear.

The biggest request we had was for pavements to be gritted however due to the severity of this cold spell and the pressure to conserve grit salt for main roads etc we were only able to get the Council to grit town centre footpaths gritted occasionally and again those pavements close to vulnerable residents e.g. sheltered housing etc. We will review this to see where it can be improved in future.

For information about this cold spell or other council services use the link below to view the Tameside MBC page. http://www.tameside.gov.uk/

Your Labour Councillors have also been keeping a close watch on vulnerable groups and individual within our community during this period which meant in many cases keeping in daily contact and we would urge everyone to continue keeping an eye on your neighbours making sure they have everything they need.

Notwithstanding these issues the snow has turned some parts of our town into scenes of picturesque beauty. Whilst we have been out and about keeping a close eye on events we have taken some photos which we reproduce below.

If anyone has photos they want to share please contact your Labour team and we will happily reproduce them here.
